Abstract

An 8-year-old boy came for consultation with a still crusted surgical scar (Fig. 2) of the right knee, due to the removal of a Reed nevus, to search for the sentinel lymph node. The nevus got evident in September 2009, had grown for six months and had been taken in charge by a dermatologist in April 2010. The report of the dermatologist and the photo given by the mother of the boy (Fig. 1) supported the diagnosis of Reed nevus with a diameter of about 7 mm. After seven months of observation, during which it did not further increase, the mole was removed in January 2011. The histological diagnosis was atypical Spitz nevus with free margins and cellular maturation in the deep dermis. Nevertheless it was suggested the search for the sentinel lymph node. We decided to monitor the boy without performing further clinical investigations.
