Abstract

The Author reports her experience in the treatment of giant congenital melanocytic nevi with a precocious and superficial "curettage". The curettage technique is simple, can be performed by the dermatologist and does not necessitate complicated tools. Another advantage of the curettage procedure is that it is a relatively atraumatic procedure with minimal blood loss and a one stage procedure well tolerated by the infant. Healing takes place rapidly with minimal scarring and cosmetic results are favorable. The limits of the technique, which eliminates only the pigmented and superficial melanocytes, are the brief period of time in which it is possible, and the need of a specialized pediatric anesthesist and intensive care unit (Presented in the International Congress of Neonatal Dermatology - Bari - Italy, September 24-27, 1998).
