Abstract

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in children aged less than 13 years is characterized by different epidemiological, immunological and clinical features as compared with those of adolescents and adults. Here are reported the results of an investigation aimed at establishing the frequence of the various cutaneous maanifestations in 170 pediatric subjects, who were born to a mother infected with the acquired immunodeficiency virus, and in 3 patients HIV infected through blood transfusion. These patients were followed in the “Istituto di Clinica delle Malattie Infettive” in collaboration with the “Clinica Dermatologica, IRCCS, Policlinico S. Matteo, Pavia (Italy) in the period 1985-1997. Cutaneous infections are much more frequent than neoplastic disorders in HIV infected children.
